COMPLETE STREETS
The streets of our city is an important part of the livability of our neighborhoods. They ought to be for everyone, whether young or old, motorist or bicyclist, walker or wheelchair user, bus rider or shopkeeper. But too many of our streets are designed only for speeding cars, or worse, creeping traffic jams.
Now, in communities across the country, a movement is growing to complete the streets. States, cities and towns are asking their planners and engineers to build road networks that are safer, more livable, and welcoming to everyone.
Complete Streets works to ensure that when a roadway is constructed or repaired in the City of Buffalo, equal consideration is given to commuters of all kinds – including bicyclists, pedestrians, public transportation users, children, people pushing baby strollers and the disabled.
Green Options Buffalo has been a key player in bringing complete streets legislation to our region. We have successfully passed a complete streets ordianance applicable citywide and a countywide resolution.
Citizens of the city of Buffalo and the county of Erie will see the effects of this policy in the form of improved sidewalks, crosswalks, curb cuts, bicycle lanes, bicycle racks, increased signage and other safety facilities. Efforts are underway to enact complete streets legislation across New York State.
Currently, both houses of New York State's legislature have introduced complete streets bills for consideration. Green Options Buffalo has teamd up with the New York Bicycling Coalition, American Association of Retired People (AARP), Transportation Alternatives and others to help ensure this bill gets passed.
As part of this effort AARP is launching Complete Streets Week: Making New York Walkable for all Generations April 19-23, 2010. More information coming soon.
